Irkutsk is one of the oldest and most attractive Siberian cities. The city has a long and eventful history. City based in 1661 in a place of merge of the rivers of the Angara and the Irkut. It was the main Russian fort behind the Ural Mountains, so all the expeditions to colonize Kam`chatka and Alaska have begun there. For centuries Russian emperors and communists exiled political prisoners to Irkutsk, so many brainy Russians spent years in the city. Nowadays Irkutsk is the administrative, industrial and cultural center of Irkutsk area. Irkutsk kept the spirit of the old Russian city. In the center, there are blocks of traditional wooden buildings with typical carvings. The city is known first of all for a rich history and distinguishes Irkutsk from other cities ancient architecture of stone and wooden houses still saved in city centre, a lot of monuments and churches. Irkutsk is often described as a Paris of Siberia, because of its cultural feel and varied architecture. During the communist era, Irkutsk was heavily industrialized, and some of its more impressive wooden architecture was left to fall into disrepair: but that`s now changing and some important buildings have been restored. If you take yourself on a walking tour of Irkutsk, you`ll be able to find very photogenic buildings like the Gothic-style Polish Cathedral, the Cathedral of Apparition of our Lord and the Church of Our Saviour. But some of the most picturesque sights are found simply by strolling the streets, especially when you`re on the look out for examples of traditional wooden houses and buildings. Incredible handcrafted and hand carved elements decorate these buildings, including fine lattice work, often painted in almost bold colors. Near the river, the Regional Museum is housed in another beautiful historic building and is renowned for its historical displays on the area. |
