Severobaikalsk was founded in 1974 as a base settlement of BAM (Baikal-Amur Magistral) workers. At that time it was just a very small settlement. It represented a group of tents, small wooden huts and railroad cars put on the ground. In a few years it would grow into the city with developed infrastructure. Severobaikalsk is connected with the Trans-Siberian Railway by an overnight train from Irkutsk city, which gives travelers numerous options for getting around. The closest airport is in Nizhneangarsk town (25 km from Severobaikalsk town). From here you can take flights to the larger cities of Ulan-Ude or Irkutsk. |
