Zabaikalsky National park:
Sacred Nose (Svyatoy Nos) Peninsula

The park was founded in 1986 in the Republic of Buryatia. The park`s area covers Chivyrkuiskyi Gulf, the Svyatoi Nos (Sacred Nose) Peninsula and a unique archipelago of the Ushkany Islands. The total area of the park is 270,000 hectares. There are 291 terrestrial vertebrates in the park, including 44 mammals, 241 birds, three reptiles, and three amphibians.
Most of the park is mountainous landscape, made up of mid-level and high mountain ridges. Forests cover nearly two-thirds of the park area. The bottom belt of forests is primarily made up of larch forests with an undergrowth of mountain pine.
About 40% of the park`s area is protected as a reservation, which means that all types of economic or recreational activities are prohibited in the area. There are several tourist trails in the park including a path to the highest peak of the Svyatoi Nos Peninsula, with the spectacular view of the Svyatoi Nos Isthmus, Chivirkuiskyi and Barguzinsky Gulfs, and the Ushkany Islands.

Svyatoy Nos (Sacred Nose) Peninsula This is the only peninsula in Lake Baikal. It is 53 km long and 20 km wide, with the highest elevation at 1877 m. The highest point of peninsula - one of sacred places of Buryats. The territory of the peninsula is home to about 80 bears. From the plateau located on top of the Holy Nose Peninsula, one can enjoy a great panoramic view of the isthmus, the Chivyrkuisky and Barguzinsky Gulfs, and the Ushkany Islands. Ascending to the summit and returning to the camp at the shore of Baikal will take you a whole day. There are numerous traces of catastrophic earthquakes of the recent historical past on peninsula.

The Lake Baikal has a unique archipelago consisting of four small islands, which are called the Ushkany. These pristine islands deservingly fall under the strict control of the Zabaykalsky National Park. The islands are a distinctive resort, where on quiet sunny days nerpa like to sunbathe on its rocky shores, forming a whole colony which can number up to a few hundred. Because of this unique spectacle, the islands draw hundreds of tourists who love nature and want to observe the likeable, charming nerpa in its natural environment. Baikal’s nerpa is the crown of the Siberian Lake’s great ecosystem. More than 2000 kinds of living organisms inhabit Baikal, and of these only one is a mammal - the Baikal seal (nerpa). This animal is endemic to Baikal, one of three types of freshwater seals in the world (in addition to the Ladoga and Saimaa seals). Data about the number of Baikal nerpas is highly contradictory; counts range from 60,000 to 110,000. Although the nerpa is not part of endangered species lists, it is worthy of special attention and conservation measures.
